Generation of a peritrochoid curve
Work Cycles of a Wankel Engine
The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion. In contrast to the more common reciprocating piston designs, the Wankel engine delivers advantages of simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute, and a high power-to-weight ratio. The engine is commonly referred to as a rotary engine, although this name applies also to other completely different designs. All parts rotate moving in one direction, as opposed to the common reciprocating piston engine which has pistons violently changing direction. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Wankel engine consist from two major parts, the rotor housing and the rotor.
The rotor housing is generated by a peritrochoid curve.
The equations are :
where
ρ1 = radius of the rotating circle
ρ2 = radius of the fixed circle
R = AB
Finally if the following condition is true then the curve will be closed :
The parametric equations of the Wankel rotor engine are:
