Over the centuries, Japanese techniques of wood joinery were refined to a fine art. Japanese joints are grouped in two major categories :

• Tsugi : a splicing joint, that joins two pieces end to end in order to create a longer one.
• Shiguchi: connects two or three pieces at an angle.
